Use iOS devices where the ambient temperature is between 0° and 35°C. Low or high temperature conditions may cause your device to change its behavior to regulate its temperature. Using an iOS device in very hot conditions may permanently shorten battery life.

Store your device where the temperature is between -20º and 45 °C. Do not leave your device in your car, as temperatures in parked cars may exceed this range.

Your device may become hot

You may notice that your device feels warmer when:

• Configure your device for the first time
• Restore from backup
• Charge your device wirelessly
• Use graphics-intensive or processor-intensive applications, games or features, including augmented reality applications
• Transmit high quality video

These conditions are normal and your device will return to a normal temperature when the process is completed or when your activity ends. If your device does not display a temperature warning, you may continue to use it.

If your device gets too hot

iOS devices have built-in protections to prevent overheating. If the internal temperature of your device exceeds the normal operating range, your device will protect its internal components by attempting to regulate its temperature. These are some of the activities and higher ambient temperature conditions to avoid, as they can cause your device to change performance and behavior:

• Avoid leaving your device in a car on a hot day.
• Avoid leaving your device exposed to direct sunlight for a prolonged period of time.
• Avoid using certain functions in hot conditions or direct sunlight for an extended period of time, such as GPS tracking or navigation in a car, playing a graphics-intensive game, or using augmented reality applications.

If the interior temperature of your device exceeds the normal operating range, you may notice these changes:

• The load, including wireless charging , slows down or stops.
• The screen darkens or turns black.
• Cellular radios enter a low power state. The signal may weaken during this time.
• The camera flash is temporarily disabled.
• Performance slows down with augmented reality or graphics-intensive applications or functions.

Also, if you are navigating, your device may display this alert and turn off the screen: «Temperature: iPhone needs to cool down». Navigation still provides audible turn-by-turn directions. As you approach a turn, the screen will light up to guide you through the turn.

If your device gets too cold

Using an iOS device in very cold conditions outside of its operating range may temporarily shorten battery life and cause your device to shut down. Battery life will return to normal when you take your device to higher ambient temperatures.

Your iOS device may not charge or may stop charging if it gets too cold.

If you see a temperature warning screen

An iPhone displaying this message may still be able to make emergency calls.

To resume using your device as quickly as possible, turn it off, move it to a cooler environment and let it cool down.

If you see a paused restore notification

If your device exceeds a certain temperature threshold while restoring from an iCloud backup, your restore may temporarily pause. You will see this message, «Restore paused. Restore from iCloud will resume when this [device] cools down.». 

This pause keeps your device within an acceptable operating temperature. Your restoration will resume when the device cools down.
